Olympus' previous rugged camera, the Mju 1050 SW, was received with little fanfare. This was partly because of its deviation in design from the usual Mju-SW series of shooters. However, it was more likely its lack of specifications that led consumers to continue hankering after its predecessor, the Mju 1030 SW. What the Japanese company didn't do right then, it got it spot-on this time with the new Mju TOUGH-8000. There is a change in naming convention because the company felt that SW was too limiting for its new shooters which fared beyond shockproof and waterproof. The Mju TOUGH-8000 is a vast improvement over the Mju 1050 SW, but compared with the Mju 1030 SW, the upgrades are only incremental.
